Romania exported agro-food products amounting to nearly 769.84 million in the first five months of the year, 4.1 percent less compared to the same period in 2009, while imports fell only 3.2 percent.
Imports of foodstuffs amounted to 1.47 billion euros in the first five months, from 1.519 billion euros in the same time span last year, which brought Romania an agro-food trade deficit worth 700.184 million euros.
Exports of 927,321 tonnes of agro-food products to EU countries have brought 563.94 million euros to Romania, compared with 566.1 million euros in the first five months of the previous year, while exports to third countries totalled 205.89 million euros for 783,797 tonnes of products, compared with a higher figure obtained on these markets in 2009, 236.7 million euros.
Among the main products exported on intra- and extra- community markets there were the cigarettes, cigarillos and cigars, which brought Romania almost 152.5 million euros, followed by cereals - corn and wheat - for which Romania received 111.16 million euros, 51.27 million euros respectively. Sunflower seeds ranked first among the main products exported by Romania January through May, with 41.58 million euros, while live bovine animals and refined oils from sunflower, cotton and crocus have brought Romania 38 million euros, 35.2 million euros respectively in the first five months of this year.
With regard to imports, EU countries represented the main sources of agro-food products for Romania, with a total of 1.173 billion euros (nearly 1.6 million tonnes of products), while from third countries Romania imported 545,707 tonnes of products, amounting to 296.2 million euros.
Romania continued to import significant quantities of pork - fresh, chilled or frozen -, in the first five months of the year only having spent more than 105.25 million euros for 68.226 tonnes of pork. There was also imported in large quantities sugar, obtained from sugarcane and beet sugar (121,630 tonnes), worth 61.5 million euros, other food preparations - 54.4 million euros, cakes and other residues from extraction of soybean oil - 53 3 million.
All the ministers of Agriculture in recent years have said that Romania's key objective was to reduce imports of agro-food products, especially imports of those products Romania can produce to ensure domestic consumption, but so far no programme has proven to be a success, regardless of the political colour of the minister.
Romania is currently supplying only 30 percent of the domestic consumption of pork and about 70-80 percent of white meat, percentages that used to be higher in the past years.
